Just the Facts:

  • Mazda did not provide fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Mazda 6 with the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine that will debut in the second half of the year.
  • The 2014 Mazda 6 with the base engine and an optional six-speed automatic transmission returns 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

MAZDA 6 SIPS GAS LIKE A SCROOGE

Mazda has returned with a vengeance by introducing the 2014 Mazda 6. This best selling sedan boasts an incredible 26 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway when equipped with the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the standard six-speed manual transmission.
Unfortunately Mazda was unable to provide fuel economy numbers for the 2014 Mazda 6 equipped with the  Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter ultra-clean diesel engine that will be released in the second quarter of 2013.

The 2014 Mazda 6 with the base engine and an optional six-speed automatic transmission returns 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

One of the biggest changes for the 2014 Mazda 6 from the previous 2013 model. The 2013 Mazda 6 with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission returns 21 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway, which is significantly lower than the 2014 model this year Mazda introduced..
One of the chief rivals of the Mazda 6 the 2013 Nissan Altima, claims 27 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway, when equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.
When comparing a Mazda 6 with the competition be sure to match it up with the 2013 Ford Fusion with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission delivers 22 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway. The 2013 Fusion with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission delivers 25 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway.
Edmunds says: When it comes to fuel economy, competition is tight in the midsize sedan market.

2014 Mazda 6 REBORN

2014 MAZDA 6 REBORN IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT

Mazda 6 Model lineup

The next-generation Mazda 6 will be produced in both sedan and wagon variants, although drivers in the United States will never see the wagon. The exterior design of the new model is a drastic revamp from its predecessor, a practice in stark contrast to Mazda's competitors that ever so subtly massage their existing designs (we're looking at you, Honda). Based on the brand's Kodo design language, the new Mazda 6 is at once unmistakably Mazda, thanks to signature elements such as the 5-point grille, and something entirely new, with a powerfully poised silhouette reminiscent of a Jaguar XF. It's a highly stylized, eye-grabbing new appearance that is downright surprising for this segment.

The new Mazda 6 will land on U.S. soil with a 4-cylinder SkyActiv engine, with a diesel option potentially arriving later. This same SkyActiv classification is also applied to the chassis and body, both of which Mazda claim are designed for great efficiency. This isn't hard to believe, because at 2,992 pounds, the new car is a whopping 337 pounds lighter than the current model. While this is all packed into a package that's slightly smaller than its predecessor, it also is resting on a slightly longer wheelbase - an ideal layout for both driving dynamics and interior and storage space.

The European-spec vehicles we tested are offered with summer tires wrapping either 17- or 19-inch wheels, though that will change to all-season tires for the U.S. market.

While the European 2014 Mazda 6 range includes a 2.2-liter diesel and an entry-level 2.0-liter gasoline engine, the latter will never make it to the power-hungry buyers of the United States, because its outrageously high 14.1:1 compression ratio necessitates 91 octane. Instead, we'll get the larger 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which boasts direct injection and a still-crazy-high 13.1:1 compression ratio. Pumping out 189 horsepower at 5700 rpm, it's the most powerful Sky Activ mill to date, thanks largely to the extra half-liter of displacement. Matching this horsepower figure is a stout 189 lb-ft of torque, which peaks at 3250 rpm. Despite a fairly traditional design (read: non-hybrid), clever engineering enables Mazda to achieve claimed fuel consumption figures solidly in the mid-30-mpg range.

The 2.5-liter engine can be mated to a traditional 6-speed manual transmission with a typical Mazda short-throw shifter, or to an all-new 6-speed automatic. This new unit features a full lock-up clutch design that improves responsiveness, as well as paddle shifter's and "kick down" throttle-pedal functionality. Both transmission options send power to the front wheels only.

Also worth noting is the addition of Mazda's new i-ELOOP system, which borrows some of the functionality of many hybrid vehicles by regenerating power through the vehicle's braking system, enabling battery-free operation of the car's electrical systems and improving overall efficiency. This capacitor-based system will be available as an option later in the model year.

Mazda Announces Pricing, Fuel Economy for 2014 Mazda 6 Sedan

L.A Mazda is excited to start receiving the much anticiated 2014 Mazda 6 sedan. Watch the video here

The redesigned 2014 Mazda 6 is now on sale, and, just in time, Mazda has revealed final pricing and fuel-economy data for the sleek-looking and sweet-driving sedan. At launch, the Mazda 6 is available only with a 184-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and either a six-speed manual or six-cog automatic transmission; the stick-shift model is EPA-rated for 25 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway, while the automatic gets 26/38. (A 2.2-liter diesel engine option arrives later this year, but official pricing and efficiency info for that powertrain are forthcoming.) Back to the gas-powered Mazda 6—it is available in three trim levels (i Sport, i Touring, and i Grand Touring), and pricing starts at $21,675 for a manual-equipped, entry-level i Sport. Full pricing below:
  • i Sport: $21,675 + $1615 for automatic), standard equipment includes push-button start, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, 17-inch aluminum wheels, auxiliary and USB inputs; the optional automatic transmission is bundled with Bluetooth, a 5.8-inch color touch screen display, a backup camera, and text-message receipt/delivery functionality.
  • i Touring: $25,290) adds to i Sport a standard automatic transmission, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette sport seats, a six-way power driver’s seat, and 19-inch aluminum wheels; an optional $2000 Touring Technology package adds navigation, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, proximity key, automatic headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated side mirrors, and Smart City Brake Support auto-braking safety system.
  • i Grand Touring: $30,290, adds to i Touring a moonroof, rear lip spoiler, HID headlights, leather sport seats (heated in the front), an eight-way power power driver’s seat, four-way power passenger’s seat, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, platinum-silver 19-inch aluminum wheels, and the Smart City Brake Support system as standard; two option packages are available—the first ($900) includes adaptive cruise control and forward-collision warning systems, and the second (coming later this year, price not yet available) brings lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam control, and Mazda’s i-ELOOP capacitor-based brake energy recuperation system

Mazda’s pricing for the new 6 places it firmly in the thick of the mid-size-sedan segment, with a base price that falls below those of its manual-equipped competition, including the Ford Fusion and the Honda Accord. The manual 6 also undercuts the least-expensive (and automatic-only) Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Kia Optima, and Toyota Camry, but the least-expensive Mazda 6 with an automatic costs slightly more than those four sedans.
