• The redesigned 2014 Mazda 6 returns 26 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway when equipped with the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the standard six-speed manual transmission, Mazda said on Thursday.
• Mazda did not provide fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Mazda 6 with the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine that will debut in the second half of the year.
• The 2014 Mazda 6 with the base engine and an optional six-speed automatic transmission returns 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

MAZDA 6 SIPS GAS LIKE A SCROOGE

Mazda has returned with a vengeance by introducing the 2014 Mazda 6. This best selling sedan boasts an incredible 26 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway when equipped with the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the standard six-speed manual transmission.

Unfortunately Mazda was unable to provide fuel economy numbers for the 2014 Mazda 6 equipped with the  Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter ultra-clean diesel engine that will be released in the second quarter of 2013.

The 2014 Mazda 6 with the base engine and an optional six-speed automatic transmission returns 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

The 2013 Mazda 6 with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission returns 21 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway, which is significantly lower than the 2014 model this year Mazda introduced..

One of the chief rivals of the Mazda 6 the 2013 Nissan Altima, claims 27 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway, when equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

When comparing a Mazda 6 with the competition be sure to match it up with the 2013 Ford Fusion with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission delivers 22 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway. The 2013 Fusion with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission delivers 25 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway.

Edmunds says: When it comes to fuel economy, competition is tight in the midsize sedan market.
